Gray and the soldiers had been toasting for quite some time now. The soldiers were relaxed, smiling and slapping Gray on the back. Any walls they had between them had been broken down. Gray hadn’t taken a single sip of alcohol during that entire time. He had punctured a tiny hole near the bottom of his cup, which he would keep covered with his thumb when he poured vodka inside. He would hold his cup near the edge of the table and allow the vodka to drain out between his legs. It was too dark for the soldiers to notice. He would then toast with an empty cup and pretend to drink his shot.

This charade carried on until the soldiers finished the first bottle and most of the cigarettes. The only thing that stopped their merry-making were gunshots in the distance.
